Sandra D. Lucas
Deputy Director
Lucas comes to the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs after an extensive, diverse career in the U.S. military, serving in the Navy and Army National Guard, public and private administrations, and non-profit organizations. Spending 16 years serving in the Alabama Army National Guard, Lucas was deployed three times, including with Joint Task Force Guantanamo and the Central Command Public Affairs Office. After retiring, she served as the deputy chief of public affairs with the Alabama National Guard. Previously, she worked in the Office of the Governor as the director of constituent services, military advisor, and deputy chief of staff. Among other professional roles, she was also appointed by Governor Bob Riley to serve as external affairs officer for the Alabama Emergency Management Agency. She also served as deputy chief of staff to Congressman J.C. Watts OK/4.
Today, she serves Alabama’s 400,000 veterans as the Deputy Commissioner at the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs. In her spare time, she is pursuing her EMBA at Auburn University.
